Description

Saxon Shield Mount. 7th century AD. The bronze-gilt (ormolu) original was excavated from Burial Mound No. 2 at Sutton Hoo in 1939. The Sutton Hoo burial forms one of the greatest treasures in the British Museum. This piece is just one of many spectacular objects found in the burial chamber of an Anglo-Saxon King that had been constructed in the centre of a burial ship. Ipswich Museum, Suffolk. 58mm diameter. This brooch is 9 carat yellow gold. Silver or 18 carat gold available on request, also as a pendant, supplied with a 20" gold chain.
